Background
The China Cultural Centre in Nigeria opened an exhibition in Abuja that places traditional Chinese art forms next to an immersive virtual-reality experience. Titled Elegance of Fans and Ink: A Cultural Dialogue Between Traditional Calligraphy and Imperial Banquet in the Tang Palace VR, it was unveiled to mark the International Day for Dialogue Among Civilisations and the 55th anniversary of Nigeria-China diplomatic relations.
The deployment
Visitors move between physical displays of Chinese calligraphy, painting and seal carving and a virtual-reality station that transports them into scenes drawn from ancient Chinese poetry and literature. The VR centrepiece recreates an imperial banquet in a Tang-dynasty palace, letting visitors step inside a reconstructed historical setting rather than viewing it on a flat panel.
Content and contributors
The exhibited works were produced by young artists from leading Chinese art institutions, including the China Academy of Art and the Central Academy of Fine Arts. The pairing is intended to show how heritage practices such as calligraphy can be presented to new audiences through interactive technology.
Context
Nigerian and Chinese officials framed the exhibition as part of a broader cultural, media and technology partnership. The exhibition runs at the China Cultural Centre in Abuja until 10 July 2026.
