Background

The National Parks Development Committee (NPDC), the Philippine government body that manages Rizal Park (Luneta) in Manila, launched a web-based Augmented Reality (AR) self-guided tour at the Martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal site on 19 June 2026. The deployment was timed to the 165th birth anniversary of the country's national hero, José Rizal.

The deployment

The tour spans ten interactive stations positioned throughout the Martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal. At each station, visitors point their own mobile devices at a QR code to load the experience in a web browser — no app install required. The AR content reconstructs moments from Rizal's final days through interactive animations and narrated historical commentary, letting visitors follow his journey to execution in sequence.

How it works

Because the experience is delivered through the mobile web rather than a dedicated app, anyone with a smartphone and a connection can take part on site. A built-in recording feature lets visitors capture and share their experience on social media, extending the reach of the installation beyond the park itself.

People and partners

The AR platform was developed by Scarletbox, whose founder and CEO Sheree Gotuaco led a live demonstration at the launch. The ceremonial ribbon-cutting was led by NPDC Executive Director Cecille A. Lorenzana and Deputy Executive Director Jezreel Gaius A. Apelar. Lorenzana framed the project as a fitting tribute to a national hero who himself embraced progressive ideas and new approaches to education. Public historian Dr. Michael Charleston “Xiao” Chua spoke to the value of presenting history in ways that resonate with younger generations, noting how digital tools can make historical learning more engaging.

Why it matters

For NPDC, the tour is part of a broader effort to connect Filipinos with the country's cultural heritage and keep national history accessible and relevant for future generations.
