Soldiers of the U.S. Army's 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, use IVAS 1.2 augmented-reality goggles for detection and monitoring along the U.S.-Mexico border under Joint Task Force-Southern Border. Task & Purpose documented operational use in August 2025.

The goggles combine thermal and low-light sensing with navigation and a shared map display. Soldiers can plot information received by radio so other headset users can see it. This supports situational awareness and communication with border patrol personnel.

In June 2026, an Army spokesperson said IVAS 1.2 prototypes had been used in the ongoing border mission. These prototypes are distinct from earlier IVAS versions that the Army decided not to field and from the successor Soldier Borne Mission Command programme. The number of headsets assigned to this brigade is not stated.

You can place graphics on a map and that map is interactive as soldiers cross phase lines, checkpoints, etc. Specifically for this mission, what it allows them to do is take data that they receive over a radio, they'll plot that on a map, and then everyone who's wearing that sensor is able to see where that's plotted on a map.

Soldiers at the border not only help to preserve the integrity of the United States southern border, but also create a laboratory of experimentation along the southern border.
