Aoolia, an online eyewear retailer serving the US market, offers shoppers a free augmented reality virtual try-on so they can see how glasses look on their own face before buying. Its storefront labels listed frames with an "AR Try-On" option, and the feature is live.
Per the pctechmag report, shoppers pick a frame on the site, tap the try-on option and allow access to their phone's front camera. No special hardware is needed. The software detects the shopper's face, maps the frame onto it and tracks position as they move. Shoppers can turn their head, tilt and smile, and switch between frames and colours to compare them side by side. The report describes more than 1,500 frames available in the try-on.
The report describes the technique as computer vision that locates facial landmarks such as the eyes, nose bridge and temples, estimates head angle and renders the frame at a believable scale and perspective many times per second.
