Ball State University’s Institute for Digital Intermedia Arts (IDIA) Lab developed Echoes of Muncie, a smartphone augmented reality experience that lets visitors explore downtown Muncie’s architectural past. At designated sites, users can view 3D reconstructions of historic buildings overlaid on the present-day streetscape.
Developed by IDIA Lab students and faculty, the experience launched with three reconstructed buildings and has expanded to five:
- Wysor Grand Opera House
- Historic Wysor Building
- Old Delaware County Courthouse
- Rivoli Theatre
- Ball Stores building
The project was produced with Muncie Downtown Development and other community partners, with support from the Ball Brothers Foundation. Ball State’s September 2026 report describes the expanded experience as available for visitors to explore during ArtsWalk on October 1; this event date does not establish when the original project launched.
