Immersive stories shaped by Black youth
Montreal’s Black Community Resource Centre developed Through Our Eyes: Reality, Resilience and Change, a VR project comprising seven simulations created by Black youth. The simulations explore workplace discrimination, racial profiling, microaggressions in education and racism in health care.
From experience to interaction
The project uses immersive storytelling to build empathy, raise awareness and challenge biases. In at least one simulation, users choose whether to intervene as the scenario unfolds.
The simulations were showcased at an event on Aug. 21. Participants used Quest 3 headsets to experience the work.
Creative ownership and classroom use
The young creators had creative control over their simulations, drawing on their vision and personal experiences. Participant and creative director Eniola Oyinloluwa said the work became more personal as it developed and strengthened his confidence in her ideas and creative direction.
The centre also wants to share toolkits with teachers so they can discuss these topics in their classrooms.
