BRAVO Education Foundation of Clarendon County, a rural South Carolina nonprofit founded in 2023, has launched "Empowering Clarendon," a pilot program that puts VR career-simulation headsets into two local institutions: Clarendon County Adult Education's Career Hub and the Global Career Development Facilitator (GCDF) curriculum at Scott's Branch Middle/High School in Summerton, SC. The program is funded by a $30,000 grant from Power:Ed, the philanthropy of SC Student Loan Corporation.
The VR platform, built by workforce-training company Transfr, lets adult learners and middle-school students complete career interest assessments and "day-in-the-life" job simulations mapped to local manufacturing, logistics and healthcare vacancies, aiming to connect rural learners with in-demand local careers. Clarendon County Adult Education received two VR headset sets and Scott's Branch Middle/High School received six, according to a Clarendon County School District (CCSD) media advisory.
At a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Scott's Branch Middle/High School on September 2, 2026, two students from teacher Carolyn Dingle's Career Exploration class tried the VR headsets for the first time. "I am excited to see the engagement that will take place in my classroom with this technology," Dingle said. BRAVO Founder and President Maureen Calvo said the grant lets the foundation "turn that vision into reality," creating "a seamless pipeline from education to employment," and that she looks forward to "observing a student put on a VR headset and seeing that absolute wonder and inspiration when they realize a high-tech career is completely within their reach."
The partner schools plan a structured evaluation to track learner progress; BRAVO says a successful pilot could support expansion to other Clarendon County middle schools.
