EDP Produção piloted augmented reality glasses to support technicians carrying out operation and maintenance tasks at power-generation plants in Portugal. The project formed part of the digitalisation of the company, which manages EDP Group’s hydropower and thermal generation assets in the country.

Launched in the second half of 2017, the Wearables pilot aimed to give technicians real-time access to colleagues or external partners remotely, alongside support documentation while they worked.

By the end of 2018, the pilot had been implemented at four hydropower production centres and was entering a phase of strengthening. EDP’s project page, dated 19 November 2019, described expansion to thermal generation as planned for the first half of 2019; the supplied evidence does not confirm that expansion took place.
