EDP Geração is exploring augmented reality for maintenance and remote assistance through its 5G Living Lab at Castelo do Bode dam in Portugal. The industrial pilot, developed with Vodafone and supported by Deloitte, tests connected technologies in a working dam environment with the aim of improving operational efficiency and worker safety.

Vodafone's April 2024 announcement identifies augmented reality as a way to help staff with maintenance and remote assistance tasks. It describes these applications alongside other situations tested under real conditions at the dam, placing AR within a broader pilot rather than a standalone rollout.

The wider Living Lab opened in the first quarter of 2024. Its testing also covers drones for capturing and analysing images in real time, robots for verification rounds, and connectivity for workers in areas where communications coverage is constrained.

Quotes

“This partnership strengthens Vodafone's solid relationship with EDP and creates considerable added value for both parties through a common aim, innovation, and a disruptive technology, 5G. We are thus taking a firm step in the strategic energy sector and helping to accelerate the country's digital and green transition. With a contribution that goes beyond our excellent connectivity, we will be an active part of this living 5G laboratory, to test and launch pioneering, efficient solutions with high potential for expansion.”

“5G technology represents a milestone in the life and management of this dam, transforming it into a living laboratory of innovation. By ensuring full connectivity and emerging technologies, we are strengthening operational efficiency and safety and also paving the way for a new era of innovation in the energy sector, in partnership with Vodafone and with Deloitte's support.”

“A true living laboratory was created to test the new technology and its potential in an industrial environment and in different situations within the confined space of a dam.”

“Systems and devices that already use and can benefit from communication technologies are part of this pilot project, from drones and video cameras to sensors and virtual reality glasses.”

“In the field, for example, augmented reality can help with maintenance and remote assistance tasks; drones can capture and analyse images in real time, detecting anomalies or intrusions more quickly; verification rounds can be carried out by robots; and even the safety of workers, when they are in areas where communications coverage is more constrained, is strengthened by the new technology.”
