Envelop, a San Francisco nonprofit, runs Envelop SF, a 32-speaker immersive listening space inside The Midway venue. The room places the audience within the music, with sound positioned around and above them, to bring people together through shared listening.
How it works
Sound is placed around and above the audience using Envelop's open-source spatial audio tools, Envelop for Live. Interactive LED lights are embedded in eight of the speaker columns to create synchronized audiovisual overlap. The Midway describes the venue as designed and operated by Envelop and as the permanent home of Envelop SF.
Programming and operation
Envelop opened for public events in April 2017. The space hosts:
- live musical performances
- immersive album listening sessions
- sound baths and soundscape presentations
- educational workshops that introduce audiences and creators to spatial audio technologies
Sessions are scheduled at The Midway into October 2026, including a Tipper listening event on 9 October.
