Fantomatico produced Hanna Haaslahti’s Ancestors, an interactive installation that casts visitors as the ancestors of a fictional family. At Tampere Art Museum, visitors could meet a digital double of themselves and see their likeness become part of a projected story.
How the installation works
Visitors who choose to take part step in front of a camera and watch their digital doubles appear. The installation blends participants’ faces to generate virtual descendants. Poike Productio describes how the work uses Unity and AI to model faces in real time, animate bodies and create descendants. In Tampere, visitors could also watch without sharing their faces.
Public presentations
MEET Digital Culture Center advertised an earlier public session for 30 January 2025. The Finnish premiere at Tampere Art Museum ran from 27 September 2025 to 11 January 2026. Poike Productio reports that more than 23,600 people visited the Tampere exhibition. The figure counts exhibition visitors, who could choose whether to take part in face capture.
Tampere production agreement
The signed agreement assigned the custom computers, software, work files and programming to Fantomatico, and the projectors and lighting equipment to the museum. It specified a €7,500 artist fee for preparing and delivering the exhibition and a separate €1,000 fee for exhibiting the work, both excluding VAT.
