Fundação Côa Parque installed interactive virtual and augmented reality displays at the Côa Museum in Vila Nova de Foz Côa, Portugal. The digital renovation covered rooms A, D, E, F and G, helping visitors interpret the Côa Valley’s rock art and learn about the daily life of the prehistoric people who lived there.
The foundation coordinated the project with byAR, a partnership responsible for producing and selecting relevant interpretive content across archaeology, art history, geology and biology. The installation includes a viewing headset, touchscreen kiosks and projection mapping onto rock replicas.
In Room E, an animated wild goat from Fariseu rock 1 is projected onto a replica of that same rock using video mapping. The museum’s December 2019 account presents the renovation as an inaugurated addition to its permanent exhibition; it does not report measured visitor or learning outcomes.
