HMP Lancaster Farms, a prison in Lancaster, uses immersive virtual reality (VR) headsets to help inmates develop life skills before they leave custody. The headsets are part of an initiative called Terry's Vision, which lets prisoners practise everyday situations in a safe, simulated environment and build confidence for the transition back into the community.
The prison presents the work as support for rehabilitation and for reducing the risk of reoffending after release. Lancashire's Police and Crime Commissioner, Clive Grunshaw, experienced the headsets during a visit to the prison.
How the project came about
Terry's Vision was developed following a collaborative workshop delivered by the Lancashire Violence Reduction Network (LVRN) in partnership with The Hope Collective and HM Prison and Probation Service. The VR headsets were funded by the LVRN, and the project sits alongside a new Safety Support Suite at the prison, which the Commissioner officially opened.
