INSEAD, the business school based in France, uses Negotiating the Future of Spiral Flow, a VR simulation in its XR Library, to teach leadership, decision making and negotiation. Learners take a first-person role in an unfolding organizational conflict at a fast-paced fintech services company and help make strategic decisions as the story develops. The experience is based on a real-life case.
The simulation was co-designed with AVRIS Technologies and created by Horacio Falcao, Daniel Landau and Alon Epstein. Production was completed and the experience was first taught in class in an INSEAD MBA elective with faculty member Horacio Falcao.
How the simulation works
The module uses 360-degree video and scripted content performed by professional actors to simulate a tense negotiation between a company founder and the hired CEO. Learners can live the conflict from either perspective: the hired CEO (Mansour) or the founder (Alex). INSEAD describes it as an adaptive, interactive simulation in which priming and taking on different roles influence the positions taken and the outcome.
Format and learning time
- VR duration: about 30 minutes
- Recommended learning time: 3 hours to 1 day, including the surrounding learning activities
Alon Epstein of AVRIS Technologies says the module shows vividly how prejudice, predisposition and the information people hold shape their perception of reality.
