LEMS360, a company that chose Toledo for its public debut, has introduced an augmented reality route for the city's historic centre. Launched and presented in Toledo on 16 October 2026, it lets visitors see episodes from the city's past at the places where they happened, using their own phone together with virtual reality glasses that attach to it.

The routes are sold to tourists from 16 EUR per person, according to the operator's website. Besides telling Toledo's history, the project aims to spread tourists to places outside the busiest routes.

How the experience works

Visitors follow the app to a series of stops and point their phone at the places it indicates. At each stop they put on the phone-mounted VR glasses, and the present-day surroundings give way to an immersive recreation of the past, viewable in 360 degrees. Geolocation recognises where the visitor is standing and activates the content linked to that point.

An AI-based virtual assistant narrates historical events and local legends and answers the visitor's questions and requests along the way. The platform also runs as a web app, so the three-dimensional recreations can be opened from the phone's browser without downloading an app from the usual stores.

Content at launch

  • Six stories closely tied to Toledo: "Las Cuevas de Hércules", "La ajorca de oro", "El beso", "El Cristo de la Vega", "El Pozo Amargo" and "La mujer del alarife".
  • Itineraries that together reach nearly fifteen monuments and sites in the city.
  • Twenty videos that use virtual recreations to connect the physical heritage with episodes from its past.

At the presentation, Toledo's councillor for Youth and Festivities thanked the company for making the city's heritage better known to tourists.

Quotes

“Thank you for making Toledo's heritage known. Often the tourist does not know the history, does not know the events that took place centuries ago in Spain.”
