Lightroom, the London production house that developed the exhibition with David Hockney, has taken David Hockney: Bigger & Closer (not smaller & further away) from its London home to a US debut at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH). The show is an immersive, gallery-size projection that lets visitors see the world as if through Hockney's eyes.

London run

The exhibition opened at Lightroom, King's Cross, London, on 22 February 2023, with a run then scheduled to 1 October 2023 (per a visitor's review published in April 2023). The review describes people seated in the hall surrounded by a riot of Hockney colour, with projected imagery filling the walls. Per the MFAH, audiences in the UK and Asia have already experienced the co-production with Lightroom.

Houston presentation

The MFAH presents the show from 7 March to 6 September 2027, its first showing for US audiences. The museum organises the US presentation in association with Lightroom and Paquin Entertainment Group.

  • Format: a 50-minute journey through 60 years of Hockney's work.
  • Structure: Hockney narrates six themed chapters.
  • Access: visitors can enter the projection environment at any time and experience the continually unfolding cycle.
  • Companion works: other Hockney works are shown alongside, including The Four Seasons, Woldgate Woods video cycle (2010-11) and works on paper.

Quotes

“While visitors in the UK and Asia have been able to experience this remarkable co-production with London’s Lightroom, our presentation will be the first opportunity for U.S. audiences.”

“Visitors can enter the monumental Bigger & Closer environment at any time to experience Hockney’s continually unfolding cycle of creation and invention. Alongside the installation, we will show other works by Hockney, including The Four Seasons, Woldgate Woods video cycle (2010–11) and works on paper.”
