In September 2023, Nanjing's "AR glasses on campus" project put 60 AR caption glasses into use to support the learning and daily life of students at Nanjing School for the Deaf. This is according to a Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management report relayed by the press in October 2026.

The glasses were developed by LLVision, which released them in 2022 as the product of a research collaboration with Tsinghua SEM. They transcribe speech in real time and show the captions in front of the wearer's eyes. This reduces the need to look down at a phone screen, so users can follow captions together with facial expressions and lip movements during face-to-face conversation.

Research context

The Tsinghua SEM report describes a five-year hearing-impairment research collaboration with LLVision. It also cites classroom research presented at the 2024 International Conference on Information Systems, in which a randomized field experiment found that AR captions helped promote active learning and improve learning performance under specific teaching conditions. The report does not state whether that experiment was carried out at Nanjing School for the Deaf, so the findings are attributed to the report and are not results of the Nanjing deployment.
