The National Taiwan Museum opened “Ancient Creatures: An Interactive Exhibition,” known in Chinese as “博物館驚奇趣－古生物互動體驗,” at its Land Bank Exhibition Hall in Taipei on 18 December 2018. The interactive area complemented the museum’s paleontology displays, helping children and families investigate prehistoric animals through visual, physical and sound-based activities.
Visitors looked through a purpose-built VR telescope into a Cretaceous scene featuring Huanghetitan, pterosaurs and Tarbosaurus. A movable AR whale magnifier let them explore a whale and its internal anatomy. The museum’s education paper describes recognition and spatial positioning that linked the AR imagery to the physical exhibit. These were gallery installations: photographs show a mounted viewing telescope and an interactive whale display.
Other stations offered a paleontologist’s research desk, fossil cleaning, animal footprints and the evolution of elephants. A whale sound station used bone conduction through the visitor’s arm to convey vocalizations. The museum designed these varied forms of interaction to encourage curiosity and independent exploration, with accompanying text supporting parents and guides. The sources do not report measured learning outcomes for this installation.
The launch announcement initially advertised the exhibition through 17 February 2019. The museum’s later archive lists the same exhibition, linked to the same event record, from 18 December 2018 through 31 December 2020.
