New Mexico State University (NMSU) Global Campus is launching a series of self-paced online Virtual Reality for Educators professional development courses. The courses prepare K-12 teachers to bring immersive technology into their classrooms with confidence, and they start this fall in New Mexico.
The series is funded by a grant from Meta's Los Lunas Data Center, which the sources present as an example of a public-private partnership that expands workforce development opportunities.
What the courses cover
The online program trains teachers in how VR works, how to integrate it into lessons, and which instructional designs make the most of it across grade levels and school subjects.
Rollout
The series is being piloted first with local teachers in Meta's data center communities. It is then planned to be offered to school districts and teachers nationwide through the NMSU Global Campus microcredentialing platform.
Voices from the programme
Andrew Sedillo, executive director of strategic initiatives and partnerships at NMSU Global Campus, says industry-identified skills let the university design educational programs that prepare educators, and ultimately students, for the future. David Williams, community engagement manager at Meta's Los Lunas Data Center, describes the collaboration as a way for industry and higher education to address workforce needs by investing in teacher professional development.
Lord Rivas Alcomendras, a former teacher at Belen Consolidated Schools, reports that exploring space in virtual reality was one of the most memorable experiences for his students. In his account it let them move beyond reading about the solar system into realistic 3D environments that increased engagement and deepened understanding. This is his own attributed account, not a measured result.
