Oita Prefectural Sakura no Mori Special Needs High School in Oita City used augmented reality in a disaster-prevention lesson on 9 October 2026. About 30 third-year students took part in the outreach lecture, which covered how to evacuate in a disaster and what life in an evacuation shelter involves.

Using AR that overlays images on the real space around them, students experienced extinguishing a fire and evacuating safely through smoke. The lesson aimed to build the ability to protect oneself in a disaster.

The lecture also included a shelter-planning activity, in which students worked around a table with a floor plan to consider how to use limited space in an evacuation shelter.

Quotes

“We made it so that we can create an evacuation shelter that is easy to use and comfortable to stay in.”

“I realised how frightening smoke is.”
