The Portuguese Red Cross’s Tavira Humanitarian Centre delivered Reabilitar para a Vida, a rehabilitation project for people aged over 65 in Tavira, Castro Marim and Alcoutim. It used virtual reality and interactive devices with the aim of stimulating seniors physically and cognitively.

The project combined immersive experiences through VR headsets with activities using a Wii console, a balance platform and a tablet, which the implementer described as non-immersive virtual reality. It had a planned duration of three years and carried out interventions across the three municipalities. The implementer now identifies the project as concluded.

Project funding

The contracted project funding totalled €272,800. Portugal 2020 accounted for 70% (€190,960), while social investment accounted for 30% (€81,840).

The municipal social investment contributions were:

  • Tavira: €25,580.
  • Alcoutim: €28,130.
  • Castro Marim: €28,130.

The implementer identifies Portugal 2020, Cresce Algarve 2020 and the European Social Fund as cofinanciers, with the three municipalities serving as social investors.

Supporting partners

The Portuguese Red Cross also named four partners supporting the project:

  • NOS.
  • Samsung.
  • Rotary Club Tavira.
  • University of Algarve.
