SEGi University & Colleges, a Malaysian education provider with more than 18,000 students across five campuses, launched SEGi MetaCampus on 1 July 2022 at a virtual launching event. The campus is an immersive 3D virtual learning space meant to change how online and hybrid education works in Malaysia, and SEGi describes it as the country's first campus in the metaverse.
MetaCampus is open to all SEGi students. Magnus Games Studio developed it and acts as SEGi's technology partner. Students download the SoCrwd app from Google Play or the Apple App Store, register an account and customise an avatar to represent them.
How students use it
Users can host events and meetings, share a link, take a selfie, talk by voice, play mini-games, shop and hold concerts. SEGi managing director Stella Lau said the avatar concept helps shy students, who often keep cameras and microphones off in online classes, to meet people and speak to others.
Scale
The campus links multiple 3D universes. SEGi reports these spaces:
- 100 lecture halls and 300 lecture rooms
- 30 meeting rooms and six libraries
- 50 retail shops and 30 student hangouts
- Six concert halls
What comes next
At launch, SEGi said further features were planned, including an integrated Blackboard account, a payment gateway, access to a library account and online courses.
