SEG International Bhd launched SEGi UniVerse on 11 March 2025 through its wholly owned subsidiary SEGi University Sdn Bhd, a virtual campus built to make the Malaysian university's open and distance learning programmes feel less remote and to carry its qualifications into overseas markets without building physical campuses there. The platform presents a three-dimensional digital version of the university that students move around, attend live classes in, and use to interact with lecturers and classmates, alongside VR-powered laboratories for experiments and simulations and a real-time translation feature. Access is deliberately multi-platform: a VR headset gives the fully immersive version, but the same campus is reachable from desktop, mobile and the web.
The reasoning was pragmatic rather than technological. Group managing director Clement Hii framed it as fixing two older problems, the poor engagement of distance learners and the cost of taking a university overseas, rather than as a metaverse play: "We are not creating a new product to sell, per se. What we are doing is creating a platform that enhances the value of existing products." Online learning had widened access, particularly after the pandemic, but left students isolated and easily distracted, and completion was the real challenge.
The virtual campus is paired with a network of physical Regional UniHubs run with local partners, who recruit students and provide in-person tutorial, administrative and connectivity support while SEGi retains curriculum, teaching, assessment, quality assurance and the awarding of qualifications. SEGi told the Malaysian stock exchange at launch that it had established UniHubs in 19 cities across 14 countries. By 2026 its own UniVerse site listed locations across more than 15 countries, spanning markets including Bangladesh, China, Egypt, Greece, Indonesia, the Maldives, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Thailand, Vietnam and Zimbabwe, and marketed more than 30 undergraduate and postgraduate distance-learning programmes accredited by Malaysia's Ministry of Higher Education and the Malaysian Qualifications Agency.
The platform was still described as operating in September 2026. The reviewed coverage does not disclose actual VR participation or separate UniVerse enrolments and revenue. Counts of cities and programmes describe its support network and offerings, not measured use of VR. The relationship between the earlier SEGi MetaCampus and UniVerse remains unconfirmed.
