Tarragona City Council has opened a mixed-reality experience, "The Roar of Tarraco", at the city's Roman Amphitheatre, developed with WeRiseUp, a joint venture between PortAventura World and Vekoma. Visitors wear free-roam mixed-reality headsets that recreate the monument's original appearance and the spectacles it hosted, taking them back about 2,000 years to the ancient capital of Hispania Citerior on a day of great games.
How it works
The experience overlays digital content on the real amphitheatre rather than replacing it, and was built in collaboration with Spatial Voyagers. It combines spatial audio with synchronised narrative elements. It runs continuously as an individual experience, with one visitor per device.
Access and rollout
- Open to the public since 1 July 2026
- Lasts approximately 12 minutes per visitor
- Costs EUR 7 on top of the Amphitheatre entry ticket
Mayor Rubén Viñuales said that incorporating mixed reality into the Amphitheatre visit lets the city tell its history in new ways and reach new audiences, while WeRiseUp CEO Andreu Tobella described it as the starting point for a new category of immersive cultural experiences.
