UAX nursing students explore robotic operating room dynamics via immersive 360° surgical playback

First-year nursing students at UAX Málaga reviewed a recorded 360° robotic bariatric surgery in VR, in a moderator-led immersive playback session.

Background

The mSurgery platform integrates multiple video sources and clinical data into a single immersive experience designed to support surgical training remotely. A robotic-assisted bariatric surgery led by Dr. Jordi Tarascó Palomares at Hospital Universitari Germans Trias i Pujol was captured and originally streamed as an immersive broadcast for a medical congress in Barcelona using this platform.

The deployment

The same case was later repurposed at Universidad Alfonso X el Sabio's Mare Nostrum campus in Málaga as a clinical simulation training tool for nursing students. Using mSurgery's Driven Playback feature, Professor Guillermo Arteaga acted as the session moderator, controlling the broadcast within the immersive environment and guiding students through the procedure in real time. He explained, highlighted, and demonstrated each stage of the surgery while students experienced it as if participating in the operation. The activity was organised and developed by Guillermo Arteaga and María Isabel Ruiz Moreno.

How it worked

Driven Playback lets a moderator steer an interactive broadcast of the surgical video sources for a group. The footage can be presented as a 360° immersive view, which students explored in VR on standalone headsets, including the Meta Quest 3, Pico Neo 3, and Pico 4, using 6DoF controllers and hand tracking. mSurgery is designed as a plug-and-play system that is quick to install and turns recorded medical procedures into ready-to-use immersive experiences.

Outcomes

A single surgical recording became a cross-disciplinary teaching asset, creating value across multiple healthcare specialties and professional profiles. Rather than focusing only on surgical technique, students gained a holistic understanding of how a complex operating room functions: how clinical professionals coordinate in real time, how multidisciplinary teams interact, and how a full clinical environment operates under real-world conditions.

Looking ahead

Combined with the ability to build a library of recorded educational procedures, the approach has drawn interest from several academic institutions. mSurgery expects further adoption of the system by other leading educational organisations.

Quotes

I think it has truly been unique. I had never had the opportunity to see something like this, and even more so, being so close and so far inside.
