UNIDO 3D tablet app teaches chainsaw safety to South African forestry trainees

Finland-funded pilot in KwaZulu-Natal ran a multilingual, image-and-audio 3D chainsaw course on shared tablets before trainees touched a real saw.

UNIDO deployed a tablet-based, real-time 3D training application that teaches the main parts of a chainsaw, safe operating technique and routine maintenance to forestry trainees in South Africa. The application was developed by the Pretoria company Naledi3D and was introduced as a learning aid ahead of practical work, not as a replacement for it: trainees study the tool in 3D on a tablet before handling a running saw.

The deployment sits inside UNIDO project 130067, funded by the Government of Finland. Phase I, "Revitalization of Forest Training Centres in the SADC Region for Green Employment", ran from 1 January to 31 December 2015 and was the phase in which the virtual/e-learning training system was purchased and installed with Naledi3D and tablets. Phase II, "Strengthening Forestry Training and Wood Industries for Green Employment in the SADC Region", ran from 1 April 2016 to 30 June 2017. Finland's contribution across both phases and both implementing UN agencies (UNIDO and FAO) was EUR 1,399,466, of which EUR 1,246,727 was spent; that figure covers the whole programme, not the training application alone.

KwaZulu-Natal was selected as the pilot province after a situation analysis. The South African Forestry Training College supplied FP&M SETA-accredited training content, and it, Cedara College of Agriculture and the contractor I.C.E. Consulting all provided input to the chainsaw application; UNIDO's activity records note that Cedara staff were trained to use it. Related programme components ran with Sappi's Project Grow, Mondi and SANParks, and a mobile container classroom took training to remote sites where, as one training-college instructor put it, there is no water, no electricity and learners travel long distances to reach a venue.

Delivery was deliberately low-cost: an Android application distributed free of charge (its Google Play listing has since been removed), used on tablets shared by no more than three learners at a time, with language switching and heavy use of imagery and audio so that trainees with limited literacy or schooling can follow it. UNIDO reports that mobile training centres in remote areas extend the reach of the material.

A second Naledi3D title, the Cutmaster sawmill simulation, was added under Phase II; UNIDO's terminal evaluation recommended promoting both applications to other forestry projects in the region and noted that both were freely downloadable. That evaluation rated the project overall satisfactory and judged the sustainability of the software and tablet use moderately likely. No trainee count specific to the chainsaw application has been published, and the benefits reported for it - safety, engagement, and overcoming literacy and language barriers - are practitioner assessments rather than measured training outcomes.

Two caveats on scope. First, the sources describe the application as "virtual reality", but every delivery detail that is documented (Android tablets, up to three students per device, touch interaction) describes real-time 3D on a handheld screen; no head-mounted display is evidenced. Second, UNIDO's story says the South African programmes were to be replicated in Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Those three countries were covered by Phase I assessments only: the terminal evaluation records that UNIDO and the donor decided to implement Phase II in South Africa alone, and in one province, so the regional replication remained a plan. Operation is confirmed for South Africa, where UNIDO described students using the application after the project itself had closed in mid-2017; no end date for use has been established.
