Background
The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) operates a nonprofit healthcare network of around 40 hospitals across Pennsylvania, employing more than 800 security professionals — including over 250 armed special police officers. Hospital security teams work in an unusually complex environment, handling behavioural health crises, workplace violence, access control breaches and coordinated emergency responses, all without interrupting patient care.
Against a backdrop of rising incident complexity and closer regulatory scrutiny of workplace safety in healthcare, UPMC set out to standardise how those teams are prepared.
The deployment
In the first quarter of 2026, UPMC adopted WrapReality, a virtual reality training simulator built by Wrap Technologies, as the basis of a new enterprise-wide security training initiative. Rather than a single-site trial, the rollout was designed from the outset as a phased, multi-location programme, launching across facilities in Pittsburgh and Harrisburg with dedicated instructor access and operational integration sessions.
The implementation model lets UPMC hold one training methodology across the network while tailoring scenario content to individual facility profiles — an emergency department and a public-access lobby present very different problems. UPMC intends the arrangement to serve as a replicable framework it can extend across the rest of its hospital footprint.
What the training covers
WrapReality places trainees inside interactive, repeatable simulations that mirror the operational dynamics of hospital settings, including emergency departments, inpatient units and public access areas. The scenarios are aimed at four capabilities in particular:
- situational awareness in fast-moving incidents
- communication under pressure
- de-escalation strategy
- responsible application of force
Wrap's content library has been extended with healthcare-specific modules covering crisis intervention, behavioural escalation management, workplace violence prevention, and coordinated response procedures involving armed special police units.
Technology
The programme runs on WrapReality, a room-scale virtual reality simulator that renders scenarios locally on portable equipment, allowing a training space to be set up and struck down within a hospital rather than requiring a permanent facility. The platform was already in service with municipal law enforcement agencies before UPMC's adoption; the specific headset hardware used at UPMC has not been disclosed.
Why it matters
For Wrap Technologies, the engagement marks a move beyond its traditional law enforcement and corrections customers into hospital security — a segment the company identifies as one of the faster-growing environments for security modernisation. For UPMC, the value is consistency: a shared standard of readiness across geographically dispersed sites, and a way to rehearse volatile encounters repeatedly without risk to patients, staff or visitors.
UPMC's public safety leadership has framed the initiative as part of a broader mission to maintain a safe care environment, and expects the immersive format to improve coordination between teams as well as individual decision-making.
