W5 has introduced an Immersive Classroom at its Belfast science and discovery centre to support school learning, including experiences tailored to pupils with special educational needs. Created with BT and the Education Authority, the room was formally opened by Education Minister Paul Givan. W5’s June 2025 announcement said school bookings would open in September 2025.
Located on Level 1, the classroom uses cameras and HD projectors to bring content to life across its walls and floor. Pupils can explore interactive simulated environments such as outer space, a rainforest or historical landmarks, with lights, sounds and smells adding sensory elements. The aim is to make learning experiences more accessible and adaptable to individual needs.
W5 said schools across Northern Ireland would be able to include the classroom in educational visits. The facility would offer three free priority days each week for Special Schools and Specialist Provisions. The Education Authority’s Education Information Solutions programme worked with BT to deliver the classroom.
