The Waco Fire Department plans to train with and evaluate Qwake Technologies' helmet-mounted C-THRU system in smoke-filled and other low-visibility environments. It combines thermal imaging with an augmented reality display intended to show information to firefighters while they work.
Intended capabilities
According to Qwake, the system can provide navigation assistance, real-time video streaming to command staff, safety alerts and post-incident review. The department already has access to thermal imaging through handheld equipment.
Agreement
The Waco City Council approved a three-year, $396,000 agreement covering purchase and support of 16 C-THRU units, command center software, training, connectivity services and related equipment. The purchase agreement includes a 30% discount on the augmented reality systems and a 60% discount on accessories such as cases, mounts and command tablets, compared with retail prices.
Planned rollout
The department expected delivery within 60 days and intended to have the systems deployed in January, according to Deputy Chief Philip Burnett. He said the designers and distributors would provide training before the devices were placed in service.
