The Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers of New Jersey (BACNJ) has introduced virtual reality into its apprenticeship training programme. The initiative places trainees inside a fully immersive, simulated jobsite where they practice bricklaying techniques brick by brick, using handheld tools that replicate real-world equipment. The system combines the VR experience with real-time AI feedback so apprentices can refine their technique in a controlled setting before working on live construction sites.

The VR hardware and software were developed by Envision Innovative Solutions, a Department of Defense contractor established in 2006 that specialises in extended reality training and simulation. Envision's platform delivers a 6DoF immersive environment designed to build muscle memory, situational awareness, and confidence with height-related tasks. The programme also serves as an assessment tool, evaluating candidates' hand-eye coordination and ability to work at elevation.

NAGY Education Group, an education consultancy led by Dr Christopher J. Nagy, partnered with BACNJ over the preceding year to integrate VR into the union's training curriculum. The collaboration focused on modernising how apprentices are prepared for safety-critical construction roles while maintaining the union's tradition of craftsmanship.

The initiative responds to workforce pressures facing the US construction industry: roughly 40% of tradespeople are over 45, while only around 9% of new entrants are under 25. Rising infrastructure investment is increasing demand for job-ready candidates, putting pressure on apprenticeship programmes to accelerate skills development. BACNJ operates two training centres in New Jersey, at Fairfield (Local 4) and Bordentown (Local 5), serving apprentices across the state.

Quotes

Virtual reality offers a safer, more efficient way to train the next generation of bricklayers while helping us better connect with younger workers.

This technology is important to the Bricklayers' training program because it helps to assess apprentice candidates' hand-eye coordination and their ability to work with heights, setting a new standard for how we prepare the next generation of skilled workers.
