GB Railfreight has partnered with JigSpace, a 3D spatial computing platform, to deliver immersive technical training for drivers of its new Class 99 bi-mode locomotives using Apple Vision Pro headsets. The three-year collaboration, launched in March 2026 and anchored at GBRf's Peterborough Training School, enables trainees anywhere in the country to explore a fully interactive, true-to-scale virtual replica of the locomotive cab — including detailed walk-arounds of interior and exterior components — without requiring travel to the physical facility.
GBRf estimates the programme will generate savings of over £500,000 across two years by eliminating the travel costs previously associated with centralised training. The initial deployment focuses on cab layout and key mechanical components, with future phases planned to extend coverage to operational procedures and component-specific systems.
The use of Apple Vision Pro's spatial computing capabilities allows trainees to interact with locomotive components with a level of realism that bridges the gap between digital instruction and hands-on practice. Safety and Sustainability Director David Golding highlighted the device's ability to bring unprecedented realism to remote learning, while JigSpace Sales Director James Levin described GBRf as setting a new standard for immersive training in the rail sector.
