VR flight simulation company Loft Dynamics, in collaboration with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and Airbus Helicopters, launched a one-month helicopter safety training programme in Nepal aimed at reducing accident rates and strengthening pilot proficiency in one of the world's most challenging aviation environments. The initiative was developed to support Nepal's zero-fatality ambition and responds to the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal's (CAAN) 2025 Safety Report, which highlights the exceptional demands placed on helicopter operators providing transport, rescue, and tourism services to remote Himalayan regions.
The programme, based in Kathmandu, centred on a Loft Dynamics H125 VR flight simulator, supplemented by Airbus Helicopters training courses aligned with ICAO standards. All helicopter pilots operating in Nepal were required to complete four hours of simulator-based training covering mountain flying techniques and H125 emergency procedures. The sessions were led by instructors Lorenz Nufer, Nick Mayhew, Klaus Kraus, and Yann Guerin.
Loft Dynamics co-founder and CTO Fabi Riesen emphasised the geographical appropriateness of the VR approach, noting that traditional full flight simulators are generally impractical in locations like the Himalayas. The portability and comparatively low infrastructure requirements of VR-based simulation make it a viable safety training option in remote and high-altitude operating environments. Airbus Helicopters echoed this commitment to safety, with Head of Aviation Safety Management Arnd von Fabeck describing zero accidents as the company's unwavering priority.
