An artificial intelligence-enabled virtual reality courtroom simulation programme was inaugurated at the Sixteenth Convocation Ceremony of Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) in Gandhinagar on 28 February 2026. The initiative was developed by Maersk Training with corporate social responsibility funding from APM Terminals Pipavav, and is intended to strengthen experiential learning in legal education by placing students in an immersive simulated courtroom environment.
The platform enables law students to practise advocacy, evidence presentation, and legal reasoning through interactive scenarios. While the simulation covers multiple areas of law, it includes dedicated modules addressing maritime disputes, arbitration, and alternative dispute resolution, reflecting a connection to Gujarat Maritime University and an aim to build practical competency in maritime law.
The programme was formally inaugurated by Justice Surya Kant, Chief Justice of India, during the convocation ceremony, with Justices Aravind Kumar, Sunita Agarwal, and Nilay Vipinchandra Anjaria also in attendance. GNLU Director S. Shanthakumar described the adoption of AI-enabled VR tools as a step towards practice-oriented legal training. APM Terminals Pipavav Managing Director Girish Aggarwal highlighted the growing relevance of digital and AI tools to the maritime sector, while the company's CSR Head, Col. Ankur Vashishtha, framed the initiative within a broader focus on education and skill development.
