Background

UIMM College is a vocational training centre for the Adour region of south-west France, training students in skilled industrial trades including boilermaking, welding, machining, and industrial painting. Despite strong employment rates for graduates, the college found that job prospects alone were not sufficient to attract students to technical vocational programmes.

Challenge

Strong graduate employment rates were found to be insufficient on their own to attract young students to technical vocational programmes. The college sought a way to compress the theoretical instruction phase, bring learners into hands-on practice more quickly, and make courses genuinely engaging from the outset.

VR deployment

The college began working with French immersive technology specialist Immersion in 2017. Over subsequent years the equipment suite expanded to include a standalone VR headset and a mobile VR case. Immersion's VR4Uniiits platform is a portable flight case containing four standalone wireless VR headsets with an instructor-management tablet. The software allows an educator to launch, synchronise, pause, and monitor immersive sessions across all four devices simultaneously, from any location.

Learning methodology

VR places learners inside simulated industrial environments at the start of their course rather than after an extended classroom phase. Students choose which scenarios and skill areas to work on, making the learner the primary driver of their own training content. The teacher's role shifts from lecturer to facilitator. Immersion provides ongoing staff training to ensure the full feature set of each device is used effectively.

Regional impact

The VR equipment is made available to regional industrial companies beyond the college's own student population, creating a return on the technology investment and reinforcing the relationship between vocational training and local industry. Graduates who are already proficient with VR tools are well placed for Industry 4.0 roles.
