Westview High School in Bennington, Nebraska, hosted a visit from the Army National Guard's Disasterville virtual reality programme in March 2026, putting more than 300 students through immersive emergency response simulations. Developed by the Army National Guard, Disasterville places participants inside VR scenarios replicating flood, fire, and earthquake conditions, requiring them to locate survivors, make rapid decisions, and collaborate under pressure. Students paddle through virtual floodwaters marking survivors with flashlights, navigate burning environments, and respond to earthquake scenarios — all while developing the teamwork and communication skills central to the programme's objectives. Shawn Griffith, a Junior Army ROTC Instructor at the school, noted that the VR format requires students to work as a team, communicate, and problem-solve in ways that classroom instruction alone cannot replicate. Students themselves reflected on the practical relevance of the training, with sophomore Alexis Paterson connecting the simulations to Nebraska's volatile weather, and Dora Abekoue noting the transferable value of learning to help others in an emergency. Autumn Goffigan, Disasterville Tour Manager for the Army National Guard, described the experience as genuinely immersive — transporting students into disaster environments where every decision matters.

Quotes

You're paddling through the floodwaters and you're finding survivors and you're marking them with flashlights.

They're working as a team. They have to communicate. They have to problem solve.

That can happen any time anywhere and knowing how to help people can benefit not only me but the person you're helping.

Especially being here in Nebraska with all our volatile weather from severe storms to blizzards.
