Vechtdal College mixed reality turns 2D building drawings into walkable 3D models

Two headsets let pupils aged 13 to 17 walk around 1:1 models of their build assignments; running since 2017, it won a 2018 national education ICT award.

Vechtdal College, a secondary school in Hardenberg in the Netherlands, uses Microsoft HoloLens headsets in its Bouwen, Wonen en Interieur (building, housing and interior) vocational course, where pupils aged 13 to 17 train for careers in the construction trades.

Technology teacher Ewout Warringa introduced the headsets in 2017 after finding that pupils struggled to read the scaled 2D working drawings used on building sites, and could not picture how wide a house would be or how high a door frame should sit. He redraws the assignments as 3D models, uploads them to the cloud and opens them in an application on the headset, so the model appears at 1:1 scale in an appropriate spot and pupils can walk around it while still holding the paper drawing. Warringa says the pairing makes pupils' questions far more focused and the build itself more seamless, and that neither teacher nor pupil needs programming knowledge to use it.

The school had two headsets, costing more than 3,000 euros each, by December 2018, when the approach had been running for about a year in third- and fourth-year vmbo classes. Microsoft Education Netherlands described it as the first use of the HoloLens of this kind in Dutch secondary education. The project won the Computable Award 2018 for ICT Project of the Year in Education, announced on 30 October 2018 in Utrecht. The school later extended headset use to havo and vwo biology and geography lessons using third-party content, and Warringa was still describing the programme as active in January 2024.

Making the assignment visible in advance adds more value for the student than the working drawing on its own. The combination of a working drawing and a 3D model gives students the right tools to deliver a job perfectly.

In certain assignments the HoloLens takes over the teacher's instruction task, so that my colleagues and I have more time to give pupils personal attention.
